(Spoiler: there is a vaccine, thank goodness.)
Ah, rabbits. Those fluffy bundles of joy with helicopter ears, endless curiosity, and a sneaky talent for chewing phone chargers. We love them for their quiet affection, their zoomies at 10 p.m., and their gentle little hops. But behind their twitchy noses lies a vulnerability that’s still too often underestimated: Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease, or RHD for short—a virus we take very seriously.
The virus with zero chill
RHD is a close cousin of a virus better known for bothering cats: Calicivirus (the culprit behind some respiratory and skin issues).
But in rabbits? This virus means serious business.
We’re talking fast, severe, and often fatal, especially in adult rabbits.
And worst of all? It’s highly contagious. No direct contact needed—this virus is the definition of sneaky. It can tag along on clothes, shoes, insects, hands, hay… even your groceries if you’re not careful. (Okay, maybe not the groceries—but you get the idea.)
How does it spread?
RHD is transmitted:
- Directly: via saliva, tears, urine, or feces from an infected rabbit—alive or not.
- Indirectly: through humans, wild animals, insects, contaminated hay or pellets.
Yes, even a sweet outdoor breeze can carry bad news if precautions aren’t taken.
Good news: You can protect your bunny!
Luckily, we’ve got two trusty shields to keep your rabbit safe:
- The RHD vaccine, given annually by your friendly Wizoo veterinarian.
Quick, effective, essential. - Safe food and hay only: make sure it’s certified free of RHDV.
(And skip the sketchy online hay deals, no matter how “natural” they look.)
TL;DR?
Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease is serious stuff—but it’s also preventable.
A yearly vaccine, some smart choices at the pet store, and a little vigilance go a long way. Your rabbit deserves a long, peaceful life filled with snuggles, fresh greens, and zero drama.
